LANE SOCIALS, EVENTS AND SWEEPS
In November 2022 we were able to organise our first 'Lane Sweep' since the covid pandemic. This takes the form of residents spending a couple of hours weeding, sweeping up leaves and cleaning the gutter and drains, followed by some food and drink. This is work we have to undertake ourselves because the roadway is not 'adopted' by the Council.(However we still have to pay full rates!)

The parking control company are doing a good job. Funny how the only people who complain about parking companies seem to be the people who are parking illegally. They had a moratorium on the issue of parking tickets from the start of the pandemic, but as people have started driving everywhere again, control measures are back to normal.

Further up, at the side of the charity shop, a heavy vehicle has cracked the concrete of the pavement. A contractor will give us an estimate after the New Year holiday.

If you are worried about slipping in the snow or ice outside your house, we have a supply of road salt opposite no.13.

An interesting encounter with a man visiting the Lane with his family. His grandfather had lived at no.15 in the 1920s and had been the chauffeur to Mr Mackie, proprietor of the famous Edinburgh shortbread bakery and Mackie's Restaurant which was at 108 Princes Street.

Following a survey of the wall on the south side of the lane, which we commissioned a couple of years ago, we have spent over £7000 having it repaired. It was in a poor and potentially dangerous state, serving as a retaining wall for the Strathearn Road back gardens, for which it was not designed.
Its condition was not improved by various tradesmen using us illegally as a service lane for the Strathearn Road flats and climbing over it with heavy equipment.
Half the cost is actually attributable to the flats in Strathearn Road, but trying to collect that would be an impossible task.

We have also spent around £2000 repairing the old stone gutter along the road.

New Parking Permits required to be on display by 1st January. The money is needed to look after our infrastructure (see above).

We are not holding our breath, but it is rumoured that the renovation works at Warrender Baths may be finishing around the end of the year (2022). That's what they said a year ago.
The contractors have been camped at the end of our Lane, at the rear of the baths building, for over two years.
